Green Lantern: First Flight

It’s funny how Warners and DC are making me feel déjà vu.  If you check out my review of Wonder Woman, the last offering, you can just insert the first paragraph.  So let’s go the personal route…

Growing up, I had 5 superheroes that I identified with:

  • Thor – Blonde hair and strength with a cool hammer
  • Hulk – Strong, but scary temper that could not be controlled
  • Spiderman – Brainy nerd becomes a hero to all
  • Batman – Able to do anything he wanted without any extra powers
  • Green Lantern

What I liked about Green Lantern is that, while he had a power ring, it was his will-power that made things happen.  By having the will to overcome any problem is how one becomes super.

First Flight is an origin story that follows the comic storyline fairly well.  An alien crash-lands on Earth and is found by Hal Jordan, a test pilot.  A ring changes hands and Jordan finds himself the protector of our universe.  What follows is Jordan’s introduction to OA, the Green Lantern Corps, and of course, Sinestro.  What I liked most is that this became an origin story of two characters, GL and Sinestro, as well as how their relationship changed forever.  it reminded me of how I felt when I found the comic book storyline of how Superman and Lex Luthor first met.

As with all DC/Warner efforts, the voice-casting and art is spot on.  I bought the Blu-Ray version, so I can not review the added features.  I watched this via the digital copy provided.

My advice: Watch a great origin story, even on the Blackest Night….

Patrick Swayze, 1952-2009

Nothing wakes you up to the reality of growing older than the passing of celebrities that were part of your formative years.  Sure, some of the greatest of all time have passed in the last 30 years, but I had always viewed them as part of a different generation.  Then those that I have always know begin to pass.  While John Hughes’s passing earlier this year was a shock, this one hurts more.

I remember the summer of my senior year in high school in 1987.  Dirty Dancing came out and became the hit nobody saw coming because they were focused on Beverly Hills Cop II.  While Swayze was in The Outsiders and Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing was his breakout role.  Mom wanted to see it because of the story; Dad was interested because he had liked Swayze’s acting in North and South; and I went along because it was a free movie.  I ended up enjoying the movie like most everyone else.

Jump to 1989.  Next Of Kin comes out with Swayze and Liam Neeson.  Not a great cinematic piece, but just a fun movie to watch with the guys.  Then one of my favorite guilty pleasures in movies, Road House, came out.  Say what you will but I can not change the channel once this pops up on TV.

Point Break hit and further cemented Swayze as an action star, but he wanted more.  He returned to his romantic roots with Ghost, which along with Dirty Dancing, made him the “guy” all women wanted.  After Ghost, his career was up and down and he seemed to lose interest in the “biz”.

A whole new generation got to discover him with his A&E show, The Beast.  It is a shame that it came so late such that we had only one season to enjoy it.

Well, Mejo, I’ll wrap this up now so that you can save Baby from being placed in a corner by an angel…

The Ugly Truth

The curse of any actor is to become “typecast.”  Do too many of the same type of role or the same character, and you end up not being able to do anything else.  Katherine Heigl is in serious danger of being typecast.  Her last two movies involve her being a single woman not able to find a guy and then screwing it up when she does find one.  27 Dresses was the first one, and The Ugly Truth is the second.

Heigl plays a morning show producer who can manage everyone’s crises but her own.  Along comes Gerard Butler who predictably turns her world and thoughts of men and women upside down.  What follows is a 1 1/2 hour serving of cotton candy, leaving you wondering why you went to see this in the first place.  Heigl has an unapproachable look about her that follows from role to role, making it hard for me to believe that she could be anything but an “ice princess”.  Yes, there are a couple of laughs, but ultimately not worth the time to sit through.

My advice:  wait for cable – even women jonesing for a rom-com will be left wanting….

The Hangover

This one is a couple of months late…..

In a summer lacking comedies for adults, The Hangover provided some much needed relief during the first half of summer.  Ed Helms got a lot of the credit for this movie, but all of the cast pitched in.  Cameos by Mike Tyson and Rob Riggle helped raise the absurdity bar without going too far.  This is one that must have the credits watched all the way to enjoy, but be prepared – this movie more than earns its “R” rating.

My advice:  check this one out if it is still playing and you will feel no pain….

Shorts

In my review of Inglorious Basterds, I talked about improv and Quentin Tarantino.  It is interesting that on the same weekend, I see a movie made by Tarantino’s partner and friend, Robert Rodriguez, and am once again thinking of improv games.

But I am ahead of myself…..

Over the years, Rodriguez has done what Tarantino could never do – cross over to the family market.  His success with Spy Kids let him work with other kids stories to see what would work.  Such is the case with Shorts.

Shorts is movie about the effects of a wishing rock on a group of people.  Readers of The Monkey’s Paw can already see where this story is headed.  However, the story is not told in a linear fashion.  Much like the game Chapters that is played at SAK Comedy Lab, Shorts is a series of chapters to a story that have been jumbled up.  The execution of this style came off better than anticipated and I give Rodriguez credit for trying it.  The other thing I give him credit for is not putting all of the jokes in the trailer, including some nice wordplay with character names.

Is it predictable?  yes

Is it lame at times? yes

Will this be on constant repeat in DVD players? Yes

My advice:  Take the kids one afternoon and relax – remember what you wish for may not be exactly what you had in mind…
